- Tilly Smith Saves
Lives with Knowledge of Geography. Tilly Smith saved
more than 100 lives with her knowledge of Geography. Tilly was on
vacation with her family at Maikhao Beach in Thailand when she saw
the waves recede. Having learned about tsunamis in geography class
at her school in Oxshott, Surrey, England, Tilly recognized that
the receding waves indicated the formation of a tsunami so she
told her parents, getting hysterical when her mother wanted to go
closer to the ocean. Trusting their daughter, her parents alerted
hotel staff who evacuated the beach just minutes before the first
wave struck. British Vice-Admiral Sir James Burnell-Nugent awarded
Tilly the Thomas Gray Special Award of The Marine Society and Sea
Cadets. Tilly also visited the United Nations, meeting officials
of the International Strategy for Disaster Reduction.
